Some homeowners opt to continue watering their lawns during October. While this can be beneficial, it’s important to take precautions to prevent freezing damage. Here’s my recommendation:

  1. Protect Your Backflow: For those watering in October, I advise wrapping the backflow with a blanket and covering it with a plastic trash bag secured by duct tape. This provides some insulation against freezing temperatures. However, it’s important to note that depending on how low the temperatures drop, this method may not fully prevent damage.

  2. Winterize Before the First Freeze: To ensure comprehensive protection for your irrigation system, I highly recommend winterizing your system before the first freeze event.

By winterizing before the first freeze and using a hose to water the lawn during October, you can effectively maintain your lawn while minimizing the risk of damage to your irrigation system.
