In order to protect your system from costly damage caused by freezing weather it is necessary to winterize systems before the first freezing event.
Here is a table detailing the first freeze for the Denver area. Please keep in mind, because of the altitude, the Castle Rock area will likely have a freezing event before Denver.

Some home owners prefer to water during the month October. In order to prevent freezing damage I advise those customers to wrap the backflow with a blanket and cover it all with a plastic trash bag secured by duct tape. However, depending on the low temperatures, this practice may not prevent damage.
I recommend winterizing prior to the first freeing event and to use a hose to water the lawn during October.
